Mum’s story -Update: January 2004 (see article written in 2001 for story) I read Watchman Nee’s biography by Angus Kinnear at Christmas (“Against the tide - The story of Watchman Nee” 1973). If you read the article I shared with you about mum’s family in China, you will remember that mum’s grandmother welcomed Watchman Nee into her home at a moment in time when he was misunderstood, criticized and in ill-health. As a doctor great-grandma could nurse him back to health but also share in the spiritual ministry. Many of the team who worked with him are mentioned in the book, Faithful Luke and others. Mum has many memories of evangelists she heard about or met herself. We know that all servants of God are humain and imperfect and Watchman Nee was no different. He was no hero, but what he understood and shared illustrates what God can do through a weak human vessel. Leslie T. Lyall says this: “ When the history of the Chinese church comes to be written it will be impossible to ignore the life and work of an outstanding leader whose influence will last and whose legacy may well be a Christian fellowship which will survive the fires of persecution and the attempts being made to destroy the Christian church in China. Watchman Nee was surely another ‘man of destiny’ who endured to the end as seeing him who is invisible. A high point for mum was when she suddenly recognized her grandma at the back of the group and was quite amazed to see her in the photo. Si vous avez lu le récit de la famille de ma mère en Chine, vous vous souviendrez de la grand-mère de ma mère qui a accueilli Watchman Nee chez elle (ndlr: médecin, elle avait une grande maison). Nee vivait un moment difficile dans son ministère (incompris, critiqué, attaqué, malade). La grand-mère de ma mère pu donc le soigner (elle était en réalité gynécologue), mais elle s’offrait également dans son ministère d’évangéliste et de prédicateur. L’équipe de Watchman Nee mentionnée dans le livre mentionne des individus tels que Faithful Luke et d’autres qui sont connus de ma mère. Nous savons que tous les serviteurs de Dieu sont humains et imparfaits et Watchman Nee n’était pas meilleur que nous. Il ne se prenait pas pour un héros mais avait compris, qu’il vivait et démontrait ce que Dieu peut faire à travers un outil imparfait. Leslie T. Lyall dit ceci: “Quand l’histoire de l’église chinoise sera écrite il sera impossible d’ignorer la vie et l’oeuvre d’un responsable exceptionnel dont l’influence durera et dont l’héritage sera une communauté chrétienne qui survécut aux feux de la persécution et aux tentatives de détruire l’église chrétienne en Chine. Watchman Nee était sans doute un homme de destin qui a persévéré jusqu’au bout en suivant celui qui est invisible. Un point culminant pour ma mère fut de reconnaître sa grand-mère se tenant à l’arrière du groupe dans les photos du livre .
