"Little old Mel Gibson has single-handedly evangelized the 10/40 window." (my comment: The 10/40 Window is an area of the world that contains the largest population of non-Christians in the world. The area extends from 10 degrees to 40 degrees North of the equator, and stretches from North Africa across to China) While light-hearted, and far from statistically accurate, this comment by Melinda Fish, editor of Spread the Fire magazine, has more than a kernel of truth. The Passion of the Christ film has crossed religious boundaries in an unprecedented manner. In spite of, and perhaps because of, accusations that the film is anti-Semitic and controversial, this depiction of the last hours of Christ has reached an audience of more than 300 million world-wide. After viewing the film, Turner Lee Bingham, a Mesa, Arizona serial-robber, confessed to taking $80 from the register at a Yakety Yak Wireless outlet. After seeing the film, Dan Leach of Rosenberg, Texas turned himself in for killing his girlfriend. A Florida bank robber who nabbed $25,000 gave himself up after seeing the movie. A Norwegian Neo-Nazi was moved to confess to bombings targeting anarchist squatters in 1994-1995. Penetrating the 10/40 Window Startling responses to the film have come out of the Arab world. In Kuwait where the film is banned, a leading Kuwaiti cleric, Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer al-Muhri, called on the authorities to approve showing the film. He said, "It's a good opportunity to reveal the crimes committed by Jews against the Christ and many other [religious] prophets," according to Aljazeera TV. Though the Quran says Christ was never crucified, thousands of curious Muslims are flocking to see the film. Long lines have formed at movie theaters in Amman, Jordan and Doha, Qatar. Parts of the film were shown on Arabic TV with panel discussions following. Though banned in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain, pirated copies are widely available. An unidentified missionary in Qatar is finding opportunities to share the Gospel are unprecedented, according to a report by Assist News Service. "In two short hours more Qataris heard the gospel than I have been able to reach in nearly five years of living here," he said. "How interesting that God is using this film to communicate the gospel." In the United Arab Emirates, the film has become the highest grossing movie ever in the shortest amount of time. Fourteen theaters around the emirate screened the film, some with seven shows per day. The Khaleej Times of Dubai called the response "phenomenal." Permission to show the film uncut in Iran has been given by the Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry. In Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt, the word phenomenal describes response. In Bethlehem, the International Cultural Convention Center is showing the film daily. Along the Gaza Strip in the many cities and towns the movie is being shown. So far The Passion of the Christ has outsold Matrix Revolutions in Gaza and the West Bank. In Israel the Tel Aviv Cinematheque is in negotiations for a one-time showing of the film, according to the Associated Press. In Hong Kong both Catholic and Protestant churches are renting movie theaters to screen the film. The communist government in China is not allowing showings of the film, but pirated copies are being widely seen by small gatherings and in underground church settings. The Union of Catholic Asian News in Hong Kong reports a young webmaster of a Protestant website in China as saying, "The Passion has struck a heavy blow against atheism." Whether viewers have been driven to see the film because of the media buzz, controversy, its purported anti-Semitism, political ideology, or curiosity, one thing is clear. The name of Jesus Christ has been named in places where it has not previously been a topic of conversation. This account of Christ and his sacrifice for sin has crossed barricades of religious systems designed to keep him out in unprecedented ways. Who could have predicted this? As a woman in a prayer group prayed recently, "Oh God, you are so good at what you do!" While I don't think Mel Gibson has evangelized the "10/40 window" single-handedly, I do think God is up to something big, and is using a most creative means to do so. Have You Thought? Au Koweït, où le film est interdit, un responsable islamique, Ayatollah Mahammed Baqer al-muhri, invite les autorités à accepter le film: "C'est une bonne occasion pour révéler les crimes commis par les juifs contre le Christ et contre d'autres prophètes", selon la télévision Aljazeera. Le coran dit que Christ n'a jamais été crucifié mais malgré cela des milliers de musulmans curieux se précipitent pour visionner le film. De longues files se forment en Amman, au Jourdain, à Doha, et au Qatar. Certains extraits du film sont passés à la télévision arabe suivis par des débats avec des spécialistes dans le domaine. Le film est banni en Arabie Soudite, au Koweït et au Bahrain, mais des copies piratées se trouvent partout. Un missionnaire "qui reste anonyme" au Quatar trouve des moyens pour communiquer la bonne nouvelle de façon jamais vue d'après un rapport du service d'infos. "Assist". "En deux heures plus de quatars ont entendu la bonne nouvelle que je n'ai pu leur communiquer en presque cinq années de ministère ici" dit-il. "N'est-ce pas intéressant que Dieu emploie ce film pour communiquer la bonne nouvelle". Aux Emirats Arabes, le film est devenu le premier film à récolter autant de recettes en un temps si court. Quatorze cinémas autour des Emirats ont déjà montré le film, pour certains cinémas jusqu'à sept séances par jour. Le journal Dubaï, "Khaleej Times", décrit la réponse comme "phénoménale". Le film dans sa version intégrale a reçu le feu vert en Iran par le Ministère de la Culture et de direction Islamique. Au Liban, en Syrie, en Egypte, la réponse s'avère également "phénoménale". A Bethléhem, le centre culturel international montre le film sur le plan quotidien. Même à Gaza le film est visionné dans la plupart des villes et villages En Palestine et à Gaza, le film a fait, jusqu'ici, plus de recettes que Matrix Revolutions. En ISraël, la cinéthèque de Tel Aviv négotie pour une séance unique du film selon la Presse Associée. A Hong Kong, autant les églises catholiques que protestantes louent des cinémas pour montrer le film. En Chine communiste, le fim est interdit, mais nombreuses copies piratées du film sont visionnés en petites rencontres ou dans les églises "souterraines". L'Union d'Infos. Catholic en Asie, basée à Hong Kong, rapporte les dires d'un webmaster (responsable d'un site internet protestant) en Chine, qui dit, "la Passion a frappé un grand coup contre l'athéïsme". Que les spectateurs soient attirés par les médias, par la controverse, par l'antisémitisme qu'on critique dans le film, par l'idéologie politique ou par simple curiosité, une chose est claire, Le nom de Jésus Christ fut nommé dans divers endroits où on n'en avait jamais entendu parler. Ce récit du Christ et de son sacrifice pour le péché traverse des barrières de systèmes religieux destinés à barrer la route à Christ. Qui aurait pu prévoir une telle réaction? Une femme dans un groupe de prière a dit récemment, "Oh Dieu, tu es si capable de faire ce que tu veux!" Je ne crois pas que ce soit Mel Gibson qui a évangélisé la fenêtre 10/40 tout seul mais je crois que Dieu fait quelquechose de grand et emploie tous les moyens créateurs de le faire. "Combien d'hommes as-tu formé pour cette tâche?" "Une poignée." "Une poignée? Mais que faire si ils échouent?" "Si ils échouent, je n'ai pas d'autres plans." "Mais n'est-ce pas un grand risque à prendre?"
